Introduction to 'A Student Furniture Restoration Blog'

“-History is who we are and why we are the way we are.” – David C. McCullough

Hello!
My name is Amber Bailey and I am a student of BA(Hons) Furniture: Conservation, Restoration & Decorative Arts at Buckinghamshire New University(Bucks). This blog is designed to inform you of my progress on the course as well as of any other projects, information, events and recommendations that maybe relevant.
As an introduction, it would probably be best for me to explain my interest in furniture restoration along with a little about myself.
In May 2011, I completed an Art Foundation at (Sussex Downs) Eastbourne Vocational College. During my time on the course, my specialism became 3D and I discovered a real passion for furniture. Consequently I found myself looking to study furniture design at university, Bucks had been recommended by several people. It was only when reading through the prospectus had I even considered studying furniture restoration and conservation.
I was drawn to the course and it became an obvious choice for me. During my Art Foundation, I was always more intrigued to learn existing techniques rather than the development of new concepts. I found I loved the idea that it is possible to give a new lease of life to furniture worn by time, use or neglect.
Along with the rest of my family, I have always had a keen interest in history, joining the Young Archeologist Club as a child as well as frequent visits to historical sites.
Growing up I was surrounded by workshops and a wealth of restoration knowledge at my doorstep. My father is a photographer for GMC Publications with a background in cabinet making and over twenty years ago he had his own antique furniture restoration business. My aunt also has extensive experience as an antique dealer and upholsterer.
Therefore I am of course a “chip off the old block”!

Amber Bailey
